Marina Nimmo (b. 1971) is a British artist living in South West France.
Marina Nimmo's artistic journey spans over two decades, during which she has seamlessly transitioned between sculpture, painting, printmaking, and installation. Her engagement with these diverse mediums has been meticulously developed through her extensive experience as both an artist and a Fine Art teacher.
Now residing in rural France, Marina's work reflects a profound shift in influence, moving away from the structured routines of city life to embrace the natural rhythms of the seasons. Her careful observations of the natural world's cycles, flux, and perpetual motion deeply inform her art.
The dynamic forces of seasons, rivers, and tides inspire Marina’s creative process, beginning with spontaneous, energetic drawings. These sketches serve as the foundation for her problem-solving journey, where she translates undulating 2D shapes into captivating 3D forms that embody movement and flow.
Marina's work highlights the delicate relationship between the natural world and the artistic process of using earth materials to create intricate forms. Her sculptures start as seemingly heavy and crude structures, but through an intensive refinement process, they are transformed into fragile, sensual shapes. This labor-intensive manipulation of material showcases her technical prowess and aims to bring awareness to the pressing environmental changes.
Each sculpture is hand-built, undergoing hours of meticulous refining once they reach the leather-dry stage. This dedication to pushing the material to its limits results in works that captivate the audience with their delicate fragility, reflecting both the beauty and vulnerability of our environment.
